Correlation Is Not Proof

City-wide data shows something striking: neighborhoods with more coffee shops also have more college graduates. Does opening a coffee shop make people smarter? Almost certainly not.

A relationship between two numbers going up together — what statisticians call a correlation — is real and measurable. But a correlation, on its own, never proves that one thing is causing the other. Coffee shops and college graduates could easily share a third, hidden cause: both tend to cluster in wealthier, more urban neighborhoods, for reasons that have nothing to do with coffee making anyone smarter.

This matters well beyond coffee. A study might find that students who sleep with their phone nearby get lower grades, and the headline writes itself: phones are ruining students' grades. But it is just as possible that students already struggling for other reasons — a stressful home life, a part-time job late at night — are also more likely to keep their phone close by. The phone might be a symptom, not the cause.

The same trap catches people in reverse, too. Fire departments once faced public pressure over data showing that fires with more trucks sent to the scene also caused more property damage — as though sending fewer trucks would somehow shrink the fire. In reality, a single cause was driving both numbers upward: a larger, more dangerous fire requires more trucks and produces more damage, all on its own.

Before accepting that A causes B, it is worth asking a second question: what third factor might explain both A and B at once?
